Halloween DIY costumes

I have always loved Halloween; the spooky movies, fun treats, but most of all the one evening you can become someone else for one night, and be as creative as you’d like!

As a Fashion Designer, I now love making my own costumes; the creativity part of the process is so much fun; and I love putting bits and pieces together to create one amazing costume. This year I am making “Jack and Sally costumes” from “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, for my husband and myself. It is quote the undertaking, but will be well worth it:

Below are some amazing costume ideas for you to draw inspiration from! Be creative, have fun, and go all out!

DIY Project Sharing- Get Patriotic

I really used to detest Forth of July; it meant spending money to blow stuff up, or drive to an overcrowded field to watch things being blown up and spending hours waiting for it to happen, while freezing(hey, it gets COLD in Oregon!)

Well, now it is growing on me like a positive fungus. yay! My husband’s birthday is July 5th, so he has always enjoyed celebrating the fourth. And my step-kids love blowing things up; I mean what kid doesn’t? I am still a bit of a scrooge when it comes to spending a lot of money on fireworks, but I am starting to enjoy the BBQ’s, the red, white and blue everywhere, and watching the pretty spark-lies in the sky.

Well, I found a wonderful tutorial video on making your very own patriotic shorts!  This tutorial is brought to you by “Mountain Girl Clothing” and you can find their tutorial here:

You will need :

Jean shorts

Duct Tape

red and blue spray paint

stars cut out from cardboard

lace, ribbon or any bits to sew on after

Here are some easy to follow written  instructions :

Grab a pair of denim shorts you are ready to decorate. Put duct tape everywhere you DON’T want to be spray painted. Then tape horizontal strips on one side of your short(the red spray paint will be sprayed in between the tape strips to create lines ). Tape stars on other side of  your shorts , spray blue all over; when you  remove the stars, they will show up on your shorts. Allow to dry for one hour. Then sew on any fun bits of lace to spruce up your shorts, or if needles and your hands are not 2 things that mesh well,  just leave the way they are!

Have fun, and be sure to watch “Mountain Girl Clothing’s ” video; I ADORE their style!

DIY recipe -Let’s make some balls

Ok, I know you read the title, blushed like a sailor and thought” Erin, OMG I never knew you were this kind of blogger!?!?!”. Ok, SIMMER down, for reaslies! We ARE going to make balls in this tutorial, but you and your dirty mind need to go take a bath first! 🙂

We are going to make”Peanut butter /oat Energy balls, AND they are no cook! Woot Woot! But hey, it did make you click on the post righhhhht? Teehee!

I am always looking for recipes that are healthy. I strive to eat right, and exercise daily. I do not eat red meat or pork, refined sugar, bread( I know , right!!?!), dairy, fast food, soda and any other un-healthy food items. ” So, um , Erin what DO you eat”!? Much to the astonishment of the populous that guffaw’s when I tell them I do not eat any of the above, there IS ways to be healthy AND enjoy what you love!

Now I am NOT vegan. I can’t give up sushi, I like, totally might die! I am serious! That said, I enjoy being creative and coming up with fun and healthy recipes, much to the disappointment of my step-kids :-/

Ok, on with the show. So I was looking for mid afternoon snacks that gave me energy, and I found this fabulous recipe for all different styles of balls to make. <Insert Beavis & Butthead laugh here>. The original recipe post was found here:

To start you will need these few easy ingredients:

1 cup oats
2/3 cup shredded coconut(I used unsweetened)
1/2 cup of peanut butter
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
1/3 cup honey
1 tsp vanilla
Instructions :
Now you can easily make this vegan by using agave instead of honey, and using vegan chocolate chips. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl until it is nice and sticky.Roll into nice small round balls(tehee!) and place on parchment paper( do this or it will majorly stick on another surface!). Place in fridge. Now the original recipe states to remove them from the fridge and store in an airtight container. I actually preferred to keep them in the fridge, they stayed nice and hard and crunchy!
************NOM NOM these were so good!***********
I hope you have  a great time making these treats, and I would love it if you took photos and posted them in the comments below!

DIY- 10 minute sugar scrub

I LOVE sugar scrub. It is an excellent exfoliant AND moisturizer, and has ingredients that most of us can find right in our kitchen cupboards. Also, this recipe is SO easy, a child could make it. No, for realsies my 13 year old daughter made some in her after school program! This scrub should only take you about 10 minutes, now THAT is easy!

Making scrubs is not only great to treat yourself and the family, but are so wonderful as gifts. Whether you need an inexpensive holiday, or a reason to treat a special friend, this is a great DIY! Now, just a few notes about the materials below: You do not HAVE to use essential oil, but I highly recommend it. Essential oils have many different healing effects mentally, physically, and emotionally, and they smell great! Also coconut oil as your base moisturizer is my top choice for a deep moisturizer, and it is an edible oil so it is non-toxic.Ok, let’s start !

  • 1/2 cup organic coconut
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (you can use up to 1/2 cup if you want your scrub to have a more coarse, sand-like texture)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Lavender essential oil (about 25 drops)
  • Jar(I recommend glass only. essential oils will last longer)
  • Free printable label (optional)

  1. Combine all ingredients in mixing bowl.  (Do not heat the coconut oil, as it will dissolve the sugar)
  2. Mix slowly, but thoroughly, then put into your chosen glass container.
  3. 3.) Affix chosen label, or decoration to top of jar. You can also use some twine and paper with a hole punched through to make a hanging label, just tie around top of jar!

To Use:

Massage gently onto face, hands, arms or legs for 30 seconds while in shower. Remember , a little goes a long way so use sparingly! Do not put on feet as you may fall in the shower. I hope you had fun with my DIY, be sure to send photos, and let me know all the fun scents you made, wahoo!

Weekly DIY- Dazzle up a plain shirt

This week’s DIY comes courtesy of

We all have those plain T-shirts in our drawer that we either wear to bed, to work out in, or to lounge in; but be honest do you REALLY wear T-shirts as an every day clothing item? I didn’t think so. Well, now you have your chance to dress that shirt up, and rock it right to the front of your closet as an EVER DAY clothing item!

The great thing about this tutorial, is you do not need any sewing experience! As long as you can thread a needle, and cut out shapes, then no sewing machine is needed, although it certainly will  go fast if you DO have a machine 🙂

Let’s get to work so you can start making your new wardrobe! You will need a T-shirt, or any shirt with a light material. The great thing about this project is that you do not HAVE to use a T-shirt, you can use any shirt with a lightweight material!

Items needed :

T-shirt, or any lightweight shirt

Favorite cutout shape( Use a thick paper)

1/2 yard of favorite lace

Matching thread and needle(or sewing machine)

*If you have a fear of needles , you CAN use hem tape, but if may come off after a few washes, so I HIGHLY recommend sewing it in.*

Instructions :

Using thick paper, trace and cut out your favorite shape in size you want. To make the shape look really good, you can easily print something offline. Pin pattern to spot you want to cut out on shirt. It REALLY helps if you have a rotary cutter, if not make a tiny snip on any edge of pattern to get you started. Cut carefully! Now, using the same shape , take your lace and cut with an extra inch on all sides for seam allowance. I know that seems like a lot, but no one is going to see the inside of the shirt but you, and having that extra allowance will assure  it will easily attach to your shirt.

Pin LACE on the underside of shirt against the open pattern you’ve just cut. Either machine sew with a stretch stitch, or sew by hand with a straight stitch. If sewing by hand be careful and do not pull stitches to tight when sewing. T-shirt material is usually made from Jersey, and will pucker if you pull the stitched to tightly. Now put it on and rock it like the star you are!
