On The Runway

Last week I had the unique pleasure (thanks to my stunning husband) of attending “FashionNXT” runway show in Portland, OR which is the Portland version of New York Runway Week.

I felt exhilarated when I walked in; we had front row tickets and access to the VIP lounge. I got my hair done in an ultra cool faux hawk, and handmade an up-cycled vest; even though I was not showcasing my line and was just a guest, I felt it was important to dress the part, and show off who I was; after all someone might ask me for a card, right?

I am so lucky to have a husband that believes in me so much, and is so supportive. He truly believes in me and my goals, he is the best. Also, he is a fabulous photographer, so i got to sit back and inspect all the fashions while he snapped away.

The runway was stunning with designs from  swimwear, sporty, Japanese, to up-cycled t-shirt dresses (SQUEE). I really enjoyed the variety, it made me feel really hopeful for my own future line.

But to be honest, the most exciting part of the night was when I noticed that Seth Aaron Henderson (Winner of season 7 of Project Runway) was in attendance. No, I was not in awe SIMPLY because he had won a Project Runway season; I was in awe because he has been one of my favorite contestants on the history of Project Runway. His designs are unique, edgy, and oh so cool.  I was so nervous to meet him, but bravely introduced myself as a designer, asked for a selfie with him then gave him one of my cards. EEK!

I also had the immense pleasure of meeting the sweet and talented Sarah Donofrio, who is a current contest on Season 15 of Project runway. Her designs were the first to hit the runway, and I just LOVED them; they were colorful, fun, and fresh. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience for me; I am ready to start making my first true line and possibly enter it into fashionnxt to participate next year.

What does bohemian mean?

We see the word bohemian everywhere these days; it is a top tag on Instagram , it is used to describe clothing, feelings, and in general lifestyle. But what does bohemian REALLY mean?

Life, Love, Art, Heart Failure and Assorted Ramblings: What Does Bohemian Mean?:

This entry from wiki describes where the phrase originated from:

“Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic, or literary pursuits. In this context, Bohemians may be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds.

This use of the word bohemian first appeared in the English language in the nineteenth century to describe the non-traditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, journalists, musicians, and actors in major European cities.”

But what does “bohemian” mean to you? To me it is a person who maintains an artistic lifestyle and places  freedom of self-expression above all other desires.

Now, the term has become much more mainstream, and really is geared towards fashion for the folk that do not have either a deep understanding or care for the phrase and what it really embodies. Now, where you hear bohemian, you think” long flowy dresses, feathers in the hair, and fringe purses.”  And don’t get me wrong, I love the clothing style and feel that it helps retain the original spirit of revolt. The history behind it though is so much more rich and fascinating.

Being who you want, and maintaining your free spirit is really embodying the bohemian lifestyle. Expressing your creativity and living your life in a centered, and spiritual environment surrounding you is the embodiment of a bohemian.

Unglup from life, find beauty in everything, and embrace the vagabond rebel within you.

Lavender is lovely

I am loving all the lavender I am seeing lately; and I do not just mean the flower! It seems to be a very “in” color this summer and I REALLY am happy about that. Color invokes emotions in us, and lavender is a very calming color; the science behind color is so fascinating. It is complicated, but scientists are working hard to break it down in an easier to understand manner.

Our brains are wired to like certain colors and  it all relates to emotion responses when we see color.Color also impacts or ability to create and it also impacts intuition as well. The late Johanne Von Wolfgang Goethe created one of the first color wheels, and highlights in many of his  past written theories, the impressions that color has in a society and the effect it has on an individual as well.

Color. It invokes and emotes in ways we may never understand.Let’s look at some  handmade lavender fashion, shall we ?

Monthly Handmade Style Guide

Soft, flowing cotton;  a natural fiber, and you can make nearly any piece of clothing with it. Layering allows you to wear this breathable fabric all year round . I have been noticing a lot of cotton gauze, fine cotton lawn; both very lightweight fabrics that seem to dance and flow. This is the perfect fabric to be be introducing itself to  summer.

What is cotton you might ask? I know you may be thinking ” I know what cotton is”!!  Well let’s have a little lesson on : How it’s made! Cotton grows  in the warmer climates of the US  like: Texas, Florida, South Carolina ,as well as countries like India, Brazil, Turkey, and more. After cotton has been harvested, the cotton stalks are cut down and chopped.Since hand labor is no longer used in the U.S., the crops are harvested by machine.Textile mills use machines to open bales or modules of cotton. The mixed cotton goes into a carding machine, who’s job it is too straighten the fibers. Then large loom machines weave the fibers into fabric. Whew! That was the short version of how cotton is made:)

Lightweight cotton is going to be HOT this summer; well, actually it is going to be COOL, but look hot. You get the point:) Whether you choose gauzy tops, flowing cotton kaftan’s or breezy harem pants, cotton is definitely the way to go to stay calm, cool, collected and as always: fashionable.

What not to wear, what to wear, who cares?

I am sure you read this title thinking: Ok, great what do I need to get rid of in my closet? Well, I misled you! HA! I do that a lot, but I SWEAR it is for your own good!

Look, the truth is I DETEST the show” What Not To Wear” . Whoever had the balls to create a show telling people they look crappy in their clothing and they should conform, and spend mass amounts of money to dress like an even bigger idiot, well…Ya gots balls!

I will admit, sometimes you see beautiful people hiding in swimming clothing, or wearing skirts so short it should be considered criminal; but that to me is only an unfortunate situation when it is a young child or teen. Case in point parents: Don’t let your teen leave in a skirt so short you can see…..stuff. That aside though, it is a personal choice how we represent ourselves, and to be told we look frumpy, bad, chunky, or whatever negative word that describes us to these”Professional dressers”  is to me, terrible.

The worst part of these shows, is these expensive pieces of clothing they outfit their subjects in, are of COURSE being paid for, but then they are expecting us to be able to afford and budget that into our daily lives. Also, who REALLY dresses like that on a daily basis? I love a dress as much as the next girl, but I mostly love being eclectic and comfortable, and the only person I am out to impress? Me. And I am pretty darn impressed with my awesomesauce self.

So to tie up this mini blog post: DO whatever the heck you want! You want to wear your ancient Aerosmith t-shirt, and hounds-tooth pants? DO IT! And rock it girlfriend! Or…boyfriend! Do not conform to what the world says you should wear, be you, and be awesome at it!

From drab to fab in less than 5 minutes

” Ok, I know what you are thinking: “Erin! It TOTES takes me way longer than 5 minutes to look fab, are you cray-cray”?!?!” Ladies, you TOTES need to trust your gal pal! I got your back. word.

word-to-your-mother

Ok  so here is a scenario in which you would need to apply this drab to fab ordeal! You are sitting on the couch in your Teenage Mutant Ninja footie Pajamas, eating your natural Cheetos (hey, they ARE healthier), zit cream placed strategically on your face, hair in pigtails, and ready to watch “Clueless” ahh! this is the life!

slide_303876_2587095_original

Just as “Cher” is about to change her outfit again, your phone rings; yay! It’s your man! You answer cheerful, asking him how work is going. “I got off work early babe! I will be at your place in 5 minutes; I am surprising you by taking you to the new chick flick that is out! See you soon babe!”

You stare at your phone in HORROR, there is NO way your man can see you in footie pajamas! You quickly wipe your cheesy fingers on Donatello’s face and race upstairs to the bathroom; it is EMERGENCY time!

e8fed30d-5f14-4234-9e2a-044c895ce688

Now is where your 5 minutes come into play. The only 3 things you should be concerned with is :face, hair, clothes. It IS possible!

1.) 30 seconds:Give your fave a quick wipe with a makeup towelette to quickly clean and and refresh it. I LOVE “Burt’s Bees Grapefruit Wipes”, these wipes are not only refreshing, but they smell like REAL grapefruit! nom nom nom. No nasty chemical smells.

2.)30 seconds: Rather than taking time to foundation and then  powder your face, go for an all in one cream/powder in a compact for a quick 30 second touch up of any blemishes. I adore “Cover girl Ready Set Gorgeous Powder Foundation” , it is smooth, non clumpy and non streaky.

3.) 30 seconds: Good News! You have only used a minute of your time! Next Grab some cream blush and with 2 fingers and a big smile, softly rub in your favorite color of blush on the apple of your cheeks.Cream blush is way easier than powder blush and the sheen it has makes it look more natural on the skin. My go to is :”Mary Kay Cream cream blush in SheerBliss”

4.)30 seconds:Grab your fave color lip gloss and swipe on a thin layer. Not only does lip-gloss add that natural glow, it is way less time consuming than lip liner and lipstick. I love ” Mary Kay @play Jelly Lip Gloss ” in any color! They are not sticky at all, and offer a natural tint.

5.) Whew! 3 minutes to spare! 30 seconds: Most hair will respond wonderfully to a natural sea salt spray, giving it that natural beach tousled look, without stickiness. I have been using this brand for a long time, it smells fabulous and is inexpensive:”Got2Be Beach Trippin Salt Infused Waving Spray”

6.) Ok you’ve got 2.5 minute, time to get dressed! You should ALWAYS have an emergency outfit set aside for occasions like this. Nothing fancy, nothing you have to take HOURS choosing, just something casual and cute. I recommend easy fit jeans and a pullover sweater(or blouse if it is hot) and some zip up boots. Have I mention that Merrell Captiva Launch Mid 2 Waterproof Casual Boots are the most comfortable, adorable shoes EVER! Basic black lether boot with simple button accents, side zip, and affordable at $100(through Amazon).

OMG! You are ready! And just in time as you here the doorbell ring. a quck sprtiz of a fresh, light perfume on the wrists ties it together( I love the light fresh scent of “Mary Kay Thinking of You” only $32.00!) You open the door, and your man sucks in his breath sharply ” Damn baby, you look HOT!”

Yup, he doesn’t need to know it only took you 5 minutes to say goodnight to your turtle friends:)
