Monthly Handmade Style Guide- Small Business Saturday

This months style guide is in honor of the upcoming small business Saturday on November 26th, and all of the amazing reasons you should support handmade and small shops.

Consider all the small business that surround you now, how they have thrived with customers just like you.The time, commitment, and effort that these small business have put into staying alive is worth your support. The personal commitment that folks put into their  small businesses show in the hands on customer service they give, the packaging in their products,  and the effort they have gone to to make unique handmade products for you to give to your loved ones.

Local businesses are also more likely to give back to the community.Small businesses bring economic advantages; when you buy local more money stays within the community. One Chicago study found that for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 remained in the city while only $43 of each $100 spent at a chain retailer. Also, when local residents shop at small businesses within their communities, their tax dollars stay within the local economy, helping to improve their community as a result.

Also , I have preached wholly on why buying handmade benefits you, the economy, the earth, and so many other ways, but here are a few reasons why you should consider handmade:

  • No 2 handmade items are exactly the same, each is unique and special, and you own the honor of having the only one like it.
  • Handmade products are usually made in a more environmentally sustainable way than mass produced ones.
  • Handmade items are not made by children in sweatshops in Third World countries making 10 cents a day. Experienced and trained crafts-folk are making your items; and while you may pay a bit more, this reason alone should inspire you to support handmade.
  • When you take your money and hand it to a handmade artisan, you are saying ” I support what  you do” and you are supporting quality over the quantity of huge conglomerates.

Gratitude makes the world go round

As entrepreneurs  it can be hard to find a positive balance of happiness, when we tend to worry so much about reaching financial success. I am here to tell you we need to reach emotional success first!

How can we reach emotional success, you ask? One simple action: Gratitude. ” Really, Erin I am going to reach success by practicing gratitude?!” YES!  And it is a lot easier than it sounds. We spend so much of our lives worry about what WON’T happen, What went WRONG with our day, WHY is everything so terrible, WHEN will it get better??? We must remove ourselves from this vicious circle of stinkin’ thinkin’.

When thoughts are twisted by negative emotions, stinking thinking is the result. In order for us to be successful in any are of our life we need to start practicing gratitude and give thanks to every single thing we do, say, think..that is right, all of it! There is so much to be grateful for in life, and by doing this we are changing our way of thinking, and bringing a positivety into our lives that nobody can get in the way of.  Now this is not to say that we do not have bad days, negative thoughts; nobody is perfect! But the difference is, now that you will be practicing gratitude you will easily be able to turn those negative thoughts into thoughts of gratefulness.

“How do I start practicing gratitude, Erin?”  I am so glad you asked me this, because I am here to help 🙂 Practicing gratitude is easy, and I like to start fresh when I first wake up. What is your first thought in the morning? I am sure it is something along the lines of ” Why do I have to wake up so early, this sucks”! I get it, I do not like to wake up early either. but I do love putting a smile on my face by  deciding how my day is going to play out. ” I can decide how my day is going to be, you ask”? YES! It is amazing to know that we control what we do. A simple” Today is going to be productive” or ” I feel great, and today is going to be great” can shape the whole rest of our day.

Secondly,  is an exercise I challenge all of you to partake in; it is called : My Gratitude List.  This wonderful idea was found in an amazing book called ” The Magic, by Rhonda Byrne”  Use a spiral notebook, an I-pad, a laptop; whatever you prefer in order to note-take. take 15 minutes out of your day and find a quiet spot. Write down 10 things you are grateful for, and why you are grateful for them. After you have finished your list, slowly read through each one,  aloud or silently and say “thank you, thank you, thank you” after each one. Do this for 27 days, and watch you attitude in life change! These are just a few of the ways that you can change your attitude in life and start walking the road to positivety. I highly encourage everyone reading this to read “The Magic” and start learning how to practice gratitude. Remember, you have to want to make the change and it can be so so easy to invite thankfulness and gratitude into your life .

So you want to start a handmade web business

So you’re thinking of venturing into the handmade business word; that is amazing! Starting a business online  can feel daunting, and scary, but the gratification of creating handmade items and sharing them with the world is far superior.

-Never be afraidto shoot forthe stars-

I am here to give you some tips to start your venture into your first handmade business.

1.) Assure you have a quality product.

This step can be a bit more convoluted than it sounds. When you are selling online you only have photos of your product to share with your customers; that is why it is important that you are selling a quality product with quality photos. Don’t just make an item and slap it online. Test your product with your target audience. If you are able, hand out some product, have a small at home launch party where you can have people try out your product. And get feedback! Don’t be afraid to accept some constructive criticism; after all you are offering a product to the world, it needs to be a quality item, and by receiving feedback you can work on any necessary fixes or changes you might need too.

2.)Get legal with it

Starting a business needs to be done the right way. This means taxes, Possible EIN number or tax ID number. Learn how to start a business, run a business, file taxes, and so so much more. Not sure where to go? Start with the “small business administration” website. Click here to go directly to the website —–>  https://www.sba.gov/

3.Price your items accordingly

You need to do a lot of research regarding prices. In a handmade business there are many things to consider when pricing. What is the cost of your supplies? Are they they highest quality supplies? How long does it take you to make your handmade item? A good place to start would be to go on a platform like Etsy and research what competitors are pricing at in the same field or similar to you. Try to choose a fair middle-ground between the lowest and highest price. Please consider very carefully when you price your items extremely high. Your items should be made extremely well, with high quality Materials and supplies; after all the goal is to gain repeat customers, and by selling the quality, well priced items, you will gain a lead in your handmade business and the many competitors out there.

4.) Find a platform to sell on

There are many things to consider when searching for a platform to sell on. Selling on 3rd party sites like : Etsy, Hatch, Amazon, certainly have an air of simplicity to them. The structure of your site is nearly set up; add a banner, items, descriptions, shop description and you are nearly set up. Plus , sites like Etsy are extremely well known so marketing your site will prove to be fairly simple. The negatives? You are competing with ALL of the other sellers on Etsy. Imagine someone parusing your shop and nearly deciding to purchase  one of your items, when they notice at the bottom of the screen that Etsy has suggested similar items they could buy instead. And POOF they are gone, and most likely will not return. As a smart alternative, consider your own website. As long as your chosen business name is available, purchasing a domain and finding a host to put your website on is fairly simple. It can get costly to have a site designed for you, so if you are on a budget consider using :weebly, wix, wordpress. They are perfectly acceptable alternatives.

This is just a small window into the world of starting  a business, but if you are just getting started I do not want to overwhelm you with to much information. One last thing to remember: Your items are a direct reflection of your beautiful creativety. ALWAYS shine positive energy into all aspects of your business. Remember; it takes time to grow a business, and if you are in it to just make a few fast bucks then you should reconsider. You want to GROW your business, and much like a beautiful plant or flower, it takes time, attention, and generous care.

Take a stand, make a change

Did you know that Over 75 million pounds of PVC material from plastic cards enter this country’s waste stream each year? Dumping PVC in a landfill takes up precious land and squanders a valuable resource.PVC can be very difficult to recycle, and contains harmful ingredients like chlorine. Fortunately, company’s like “Earthworks ” are now offering ways for retailers and manufactures to recycle their cards. According to Earthworks ” we have developed a system in which scrap polymeric material is recovered from consumers and retailers, reground into recycled scrap polymeric particles, and then recycled into a section of polymeric sheet material which is then distributed for use manufacturing new plastic cards”.

Why just PVC, you ask? Well, there is much more than PVC destroying and filling our landfills, but the focus remains upon this subject as I, Erin Bass, Fashion Designer extraordinaire am entering the “Upcycled Oregon ” contest where one must create a piece of runway fashion that is a minimum of 75% recyclable.  I have an amazing design with PVC material  and paper planned and cannot wait to share it  here with my readers, so keep checking back, and be sure to subscribe so you get daily notifications!

Passion

Remember, recycling is not something to be ignored or joked about. As our landfills overflow, there will come a day they cannot handle anymore and we cannot control the flow. Start caring and make a change now.
